Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the contribution of the dimensions of alexithymia in predicting life orientation among university students. A descriptive correlational design was employed on a sample of 204 participants, including 127 males and 77 females from Kuwait and Jordan, aged between 17 and 45 years. Participants completed the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Life Orientation Test. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between life orientation and the total alexithymia score, as well as the dimensions of difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings, whereas no significant correlation was found with externally oriented thinking. No statistically significant gender differences were found in life orientation. However, significant gender differences were found in the total alexithymia score and in the dimensions of difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings, with females scoring higher than males. Furthermore, the predictive contribution of alexithymia dimensions differed by gender. Among males, the dimensions explained 10% of the variance in life orientation, and difficulty describing feelings was the only significant predictor. Among females, the dimensions explained 21% of the variance, and difficulty identifying feelings was the only significant predictor of life orientation.
