Abstract

The present study aimed to identify both the level of cognitive dissonance and future anxiety among university students and to explore the predictive ability of cognitive dissonance in future anxiety. To achieve the objectives of the study, a sample of 258 students at Yarmouk University, Jordan, was given the cognitive dissonance scale (Al-Adamat & Atoum, 2023) and the future anxiety scale (Zaleski, 1996). The results of the study indicated that the level of cognitive dissonance was low and the level of future anxiety was moderate. The results showed that cognitive dissonance can predict future anxiety and explain (21.4%) of the variance in students' future anxiety. The study concluded that conflicting thoughts or unresolved issues tend to increase future anxiety and uncertainty tends to rise.
